  • Circa:

  • Notes:
  • The Town is the second novel in Faulkner's trilogy featuring the Snopes family, "who took root…and proliferated… until they out-maneuvered and overpowered a society and culture that had little defense against their invincible rapacity." The Town tells the story of Flem Snopes' rise to power in Jefferson, the seat of fictional Yoknapatawpha County, Mississippi. Faulkner, a Mississippi native, based the fictional town of Jefferson on his real experiences in Oxford; The Town and the rest of the Snopes trilogy embody the cultural pathology of the New South after the Civil War. Like the other books in the series, The Hamlet (1940) and The Mansion (1959), The Town can be read in isolation but is richer in meaning when considered as part of the whole series.
