  • Notes:
  • A Souf rug combines flatweave and pile. The Souf technique combines a design in raised (relief) pile with a flatwoven (in any one of several techniques) ground. Silk Souf’s, often antique, originate from Kashan. But this high-low effect has been adopted in many modern carpet production regions. Passing one’s hand across a Souf gives a pleasant tactile sensation and one can trace out the design blindfolded. In general, any rug with two heights of pile can be considered a Souf. Souf rugs are popular in Iran and little understood elsewhere, except by Persians and people who really know fine carpets. They have a three dimensionality that does not come across in a picture. Additionally, a Souf is art and it is not meant to be walked upon. Chinese hand knotted rugs with Persian designs are often exported to the middle East to be sold as authentic Persian rugs, which says a lot about their quality. In fact, critics fault them for being too-perfect copies. They are without flaw or irregularity. Their edges and ends are perfectly straight, their colors perfectly consistent. A design figure in one quadrant of the rugs is repeated without fail in the other three. The other side of the coin, though, is that their quality control may be unsurpassed. Chinese silk rugs are among the most lavish Oriental rugs in the market. Rugs as fine as the finest silk Chinese rugs allow for the most astonishing shading and detail. I don’t believe that anyone can fail to be impressed by them.
