Description: Antique Persian Mashad rug, hand knotted in Persia of 100% natural wool. This rug is 60+ years old, has medium wool piles and is in excellent condition for its age. Beautiful colors made with excellent quality, and showing some signs of abrash from the use of antique vegetable dyes. This shade of red is a telltale sign that this is a Mashad rug. The weaver has stitched his name into the rug which is a sign of very high quality. No holes, very plush, classy and soft. Gorgeous design and a near perfect rectangle. This rug was acquired from a Virginia estate. Clean and ready to be enjoyed. Recent embargoes by the U.S. against Iranian goods should cause the value of these rugs to increase.

  • Notes: Mashad Rugs are easy to recognize, with their famous medallions surrounded by floral motifs. They are often dominated by red tones, with blue tones in the border. High-quality wool is used, giving a hardwearing carpet, and they are reminiscent of Persian carpets from Kashan. Based on normally a cotton foundation, the wool pile used in Mashad rugs is amongst the best in Iran. The wool used is soft and the pile is tight and thin. Dark red, blue and khaki are the typical colors used in the carpets making up a curvilinear pattern with a single central medallion, the corners are generally illustrating floral designs, and floral motifs occupy the background. Many of the best carpets in the world are made in Iran, and many of the best carpets in Iran are made in Mashad. Most of the Mashad carpets are fairly large in size, although it is possible to find designs of any size.
