  • About the Artist: The following information was submitted in September of 2006 by the artist: When I was in the fifth grade, (Pittsburgh, PA) teachers were asked to recommend one pupil to attend Saturday morning art classes at the Carnegie Museum (two trolley rides from home).  I was among the chosen.  My father accompanied me, with the understanding that the first time would be the last. There were 500 students!  Elmer Stephan, the teacher, was kind, articulate, patient and encouraging. We loved him. We were given crayons, huge sheets of paper, and instructions to "fill the page", no blank space.  I complied. Fast forward to 1958.  Fulbright scholarship in hand, I sailed to Europe on the Ile de France. (It, and its "sister", the Normandie, were the two most elegant ships ever built!) In those days, passenger ships were firmly separated by class, (wealthy in first class, students in steerage, four to a cabin).  However, many well-to-do seniors, eager to meet the "younger generation", were  quick to invite us to join them for dinner, dancing, and partying in first class. Two years in Paris in my 20's! What could be sweeter? I shared a spacious studio with another artist on the fifth floor of the students' dorm.  My days were full; attending the Sorbonne, studying Comparative Literature (Master's degree) + studying Art with Andre Lhote, the late Cubist.  I shared his expertise in his well-worn atelier - complete with a potbelllied stove and a curvaceous model, more often than not, nude.  The "Master" would walk around the room and critique our efforts with a sharp black crayon, always eliminating details. A wonderful experience!  Andre Lhote's principles shaped my style, now more than ever! When I returned to Pittsburgh, thriving corporations were eager to acquire original art for their lobbies and executive suites.  In the right place at the right time, my paintings were much in demand!   Pittsburgh is all hills and dales, rivers, bridges - the perfect background for the city's skyscrapers.  A glance in any direction inspired a painting! BIG ones!  Using acrylic on masonite, these I turned out, nonstop, always with the intention of accurately "recording" the city as it was.  The major corporation became my best clients -and my clients became my friends. Gradually the corporations downsized, then disappeared.  Subsequently, I began to paint portraits of children.  Why children?  Because they are natural, fun to work with. and do not need to be flattered.  (I seldom paint adults.  Some may expect an artist to be a plastic surgeon). I paint single portraits of beautiful children.  Why individual portraits? Because each child will have his/her own portrait when an adult. (Occasionally, if my patron insists, I will - reluctantly - paint two or several siblings together.)  Here are the names of two clients whom you may recognize: the late Fred Rogers ("Mister Rogers Neighborhood"); I painted a portrait of his son.  And, automobile tycoon, Lee Iacocca; I painted his daughters, Lia and Kathie.  Kathie's portrait included her young daughter. My work has been published in Cat Fancy magazine featuring some of  my portraits of cats, and American Artist Magazine which featured my portraits of children. Annually, I am the Artist-in-Residence on cruise ships, e.g., Holland America's Rotterdam, Cunard's QE2, and several others.  When ships are at sea, passengers are eager art students, happy to be learning and meeting people. Usually, I am invited to give a lecture or two.  The most articulate way to do this is to show color slides of my work, and invite questions and comments from viewers.  A dialogue stimulates, informs and entertains substantially more than a lecture!  When the ship docks at a port, I am among the passengers excited to go ashore.  With camera in hand, I eagerly explore the area and snap photographs, which are later transformed into reference materital for new paintings. I continue to love to paint. I am very lucky. Robert Schmalzried.
