  • About the Artist: Jeswald, the son of an Ohio factory worker was born in 1927 and raised in an Italian-American enclave in the village of Leetonia. During World War II, he joined the service, went to Germany in 1945 and was among the first Americans to enter the concentration camps. He saw Dachau. He entered those death camps as a 17-year-old Catholic boy and came out somebody completely different, said Hester Jeswald, his widow. She went to say that he had no idea that this kind of horror could happen. His paintings have always had black in them and that is where this comes from. Joseph Jeswald studied at the Academie Julian and Academie Fernand Leger in Paris and at Columbia Univeristy. He began exhibiting his work in 1955 and subsequently had numerous one-man shows all along the East Coast. His work is part of many distinguished private collections in addition to the permanent collections of Addison Gallery of American Art, The Hirschhorn Museum, Colby College, Simmons College, Rockefeller Foundation and the Neuberger Museum of Art. Mr. Jeswald was the founder and president of Montserrat College of Art from 1970-1984. From 1991-2009 he lived and worked in Sarasota, Fl where his wife maintains his studio. He said that however much I am indebted to the plastic concerns of the vital painting of my time, I have been unable to abandon the dominance of the human figure in my work. I have never been absorbed in art beyond its use as a means of formalizing the imagery which insinuates itself from my immersion in human experience. Not quite icons, not quite metaphors, I would like my paintings to effect awareness the way Proust's petite madeleine effected memory.
