  • About The Artist: Frederic Schuler Briggs, known as Fritz, was born in Baltimore in the home of his grandfather, the noted Baltimore sculptor, Hans Schuler. He attended Frostburg State College, and then graduated with a BFA from The Maryland Institute of Art in 1960. Fritz served two years as an illustrator for the Department of Special Sciences, the United States Military Academy in West Point, New York. As a practicing artist and teacher, his paintings hang in many private collections. In addition, he has executed commissions in watercolor for Christmas cards, placemats, books, and prints for national distribution. Fritz has a unique ability to render a subject both architecturally and idealistically; architecturally for historical purposes, and idealistically to elicit the grandeur in homes and buildings. He has developed a felt tip pen technique which allows him to do quick sketches during his extensive, annual travels to Europe and elsewhere. This allows him to do quick sketches for later use in finished work. In 1968, Fritz was elected to the coveted American Watercolor Society. In 1972 one of his paintings was selected for the Society’s traveling exhibit throughout the United States. He is a member of the Baltimore Watercolor Society, serving twice as its President. In 1973, he had the distinction of being elected to the Salmagundi Club in New York City. He was further honored in 1980 when he received First Prize in the annual Watercolor Exhibition held by the organization. In 2010 Fritz won a prize at the American Watercolor Society and, once again, was selected for their annual traveling exhibit. Fritz is currently teaching watercolor at the family owned Schuler School of Fine Arts. He also conducts workshops across the state and beyond.
