- About The Artist: Perkinson's interest in art began in 1979 with a little coaxing from his wife to take lessons from their friend, local artist Ellie Cox. It turns out, he said, "I was born to do watercolor. Standing in a T-shirt, shorts and sandals in his home studio last week, he got to work painting after work. "This is the way I like to do it," he said happily, standing over his painting table, brush swishing vivid colors, pigments flowing unpredictably across wet paper. "Free and loose some people call it an accident. I call it an opportunity." A scene emerged from the paper. "I want lots of contrast, and light and dark. This is one decision after another, as fast as I can make them," Perkinson explained. "You don't paint with your fingers. You paint with your body." His free-form watercolor technique stands in sharp relief from the painstaking precision of his dentistry. And, better yet, "it doesn't spit at me, cry and yell, complain about the money." "Can you imagine how much fun this is?" he asks, and then strokes a line of color: "Let this be a tree." The prolific watercolorist donates his paintings to nonprofit organizations, which typically auction them at fundraising events. His gifts of art have raised millions of dollars for charities in the Richmond region. "He must hide elves somewhere," Retchin said. "How can anyone work that much, build a practice and still paint?"
