  • About The Artist: Juan Damaso Gaspar has been drawing on amate (handmade bark paper) for 30+ years. He is very grounded and serious about his work. There was a gallero (cock fighting enthusiast) in Xalitla when he was a boy and he became fascinated with the fighting cocks and started drawing them when he was 10 years old. Juan is a self-taught artist who has become highly regarded for his creative and unique designs. Xalitla is a town that is renowned for producing amate paintings. The traditional paper amate paintings merge two craft traditions of Mexico. Some ancient pottery villages of Balsas River Basin, in the state of Guerrero, developed, possibly in the 19th century, two styles of pottery decoration then moved to amate. Due to difficulties in the economic atmosphere in Mexico, in the late fifties and early sixties artists began looking for less expensive means of expressing their art — they found amate paper. This art form has sustained its attraction for collectors and tourists alike. Papel amate is one of the most widely available Mexican indigenous handicrafts, sold both nationally and abroad. The bark is clear when dry. It is boiled in a pan with a little lime and ash. When properly softened, the bark is drained, then placed on a table in strips overlapping to form a grid. With a specially-shaped stone, the fiber is hit over and over until it is flat and the fibers are completely integrated. Finally, the amate can dry in the sun. The paper may have different shades depending on the bark used.
