No library can be called complete if it is missing these greatest books of the western world. This 54-volume set was created to represent a complete classical western education, featuring the most highly valued and enduring books ever written. The Great Books of the Western World began as an educational project by the University of Chicago, who sought to develop a course of study rendering the reader as a fully intellectually rounded student familiar with the most important writings and thoughts of western civilization developed over three millennia. First introduced at the University of Chicago, this series of books was then published in limited edition for the general public in 1952 by Encyclopædia Britannica, Inc.
