  • About The Artist: James was a painter, teacher and writer, born in Richmond, VA. He lived in Richmond and also maintained a home in Salisbury, Vermont. He was a member of the Society of Washington Artists, the southern Vermont Artists, the Academy of Fine Arts and Science (Richmond) and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts (Richmond). He exhibited at the Society of Independent Artists (NYC), the Art Institute of Chicago and the Salons of America (NYC). In 1943, Mr. G. Watson James, Jr., a Virginia artist and employee of Division of Motor Vehicles, met with Colonel C. W. Woodson, Jr., Superintendent of State Police, and shared his vision to create the first art gallery in the Nation to memorialize the members of the Department who had died in the line of duty. Mr. James never wavered from his resolve to see the project through.  He was faced with the progression of World War II, a lack of funding, as well as unsuitable or even nonexistent photographs of some of the troopers he wished to honor.  For funding, he was willing to donate his time and talent to make the gallery a success, and he knew other Virginia artists would feel the same.  The first two artists he approached proved James correct and they began working on portraits immediately.
