  • About The Artist: Born in Cambridge on July 18, 1921, he was the son of the late Nathaniel and Adelaide (Waller) Burnett. He was a resident of Medway since 1977 and formerly resided in Newton. Calvin Burnett (July 18, 1921, Cambridge, Massachusetts - October 8, 2007 in Medway, Massachusetts) was an African-American artist, illustrator and art educator. Calvin Burnett graduated from the Massachusetts School of Art in 1942, and received his MFA from Boston University in 1960. He has taught at a number of institutions in the northeastern United States, including the Massachusetts College of Art and the DeCordova Museum. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States, in galleries and museums including the Smithsonian Institution and the Brooklyn Museum. Mr. Burnett received a bachelors degree from the Massachusetts College of Art and a masters degree in Fine Arts from Boston University. He was a professor at the Massachusetts College of Art for 33 years until his retirement in 1985. A well-known Boston artist, Mr. Burnett specialized in printmaking, illustration and painting. His work is in collections at the Smithsonian, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of African American History and Boston Public Library, as well as in many private collections. Mr. Burnett was the author of Objective Drawing Techniques, a book used in many colleges. He was also the founder of the Association of African American Artists and was listed in both Whos Who in American Art and Whos Who in Education. Calvin Burnett, 86, of Medway, died on Monday, October 8, 2007 at the Medway Country Manor Nursing Home.
